J.W. “Bill” and Ruth Daffron Christie, both descendents of old Collin County farm families, were great contributors to Frisco and to the young people of this community.
Ruth lost both her father and mother before the age of 12 and was raised by an older sister. She went on to become valedictorian of her senior class and a graduate of North Texas Teachers College, now known as the University of North Texas. A former teacher, Ruth’s support of public education was always evident through her work volunteering at the schools of her twin sons. Her love of children was recognized by Frisco children who returned her fondness and called her “Granny Ruth.”
Bill served with distinction in World War II as a flight instructor, pilot and engineering test pilot before starting his first business with a second-hand Jeep at a gas station on Main Street in 1948. With Ruth’s support and help, he developed J.W. “Bill” Christie, Inc., which was Frisco’s largest employer for many years. His hard work and innovative technology developed into a multi-level pipeline, manufacturing and real estate company. From his contract pipeline business with Lone Star Gas Company to his many patents on heat fusion equipment for polyethylene pipe, he was a leader in the area.
In their own quiet way, never wanting recognition, they helped those in need and also supported every project in Frisco that involved youth. They had their hand supporting several organizations including the Parent Teacher Association, area FFA, Frisco High School Band, Frisco Youth Center and church groups. Whatever was needed, they were ready to provide support. Their love for their family, friends and community and support for the Frisco school system were always very important and prominent in their lives.
